Laikipia West District is a rich agricultural land to the west of snow-capped Mount Kenya, straddling the equator at the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. It spans an area of over 4,769km², and forms part of the 25,000km² Ewaso ecosystems.
The Laikipia plains stretch from the Great Rift Valley to magnificent escarpments which descend into the Northern Frontier District. These plains are physically diverse and scenically spectacular, covered by open grasslands, basalt hills, lonely kopjes and dense cedar forests, fed by the Ewaso Nyiro and Ewaso Narok rivers.
The district is located in the central region of Kenya, on the equator. The district has three major urban centres: Nyahururu which is the town capital, Kinamba and Rumuruti. The district has a population of 250,177. It Also is the pre-colonial home for the Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Samburu, and Turkana, giving the district a diverse population.
Economic activity in the district consists mainly of tourism and agriculture, chiefly grains(Wheat and maize) ,daily farming and ranching. The district enjoys a cool, temperate climate with both rainy and dry seasons. Laikipia west has the fifth largest average size of constituency (4,769km2) in Rift Valley.
