Landuse 70% of Laikipia District is classified as high potential land. These zones are found in Nyahururu and Ng'arua Division, which cover part of Salama and Marmanet Locations. The medium potential agro-climatic zone , to which most of the land around Rumuruti Forest belongs, is bushland with scattered Juniperus and Acacia trees. In former times the grazing of livestock was the main land use. Presently, the people in the settlements around Rumuruti Forest are cultivating land for subsistence in combination with cattle herding. Rain-fed crops are maize, beans, potatoes, millet, sorghum, cassava, sweet potatoes, wheat and peas. Some horticulture is done along Pesi River with tomatoes, cabbages, onions, peas and carrots mainly destined for external markets On the Marmanet side of the Rumuruti Forest, the soils are more arable than on the Salama side. In contrast to Marmanet, the Salama Location receives hunting quota from KWS under their cropping programme.
Cattle-rearing on large commercial ranches and community owned rangelands has for many years been the life-blood of the community. As so much of Laikipia has traditionally been used for low intensity grazing it has become a cherished haven for big game. The full cross-section of land owners is intimately involved in conservation, and the combination of abundant wildlife and exceptional scenic beauty provides the basis to many new developments in high quality ecotourism.
